The German national team has called up midfielder Emre Can to replace Aleksandar Pavlović, who is suffering from tonsillitis, for the Euro 2024 football championship starting on Friday, the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Wednesday.
Can, who captained Borussia Dortmund in their 2-0 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, made his international debut in 2005 but has not played for the national team since September 2023. The former Liverpool and Juventus midfielder has 43 caps and one goal for Germany.
A DFB representative said during a press conference at the team's headquarters in preparation for the European Championship that the decision to call up Can in place of Pavlović was made by the coaching staff led by Julian Nagelsmann.
Pavlović, the 20-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder, was called up for the first time in March but missed the friendlies against France and the Netherlands due to a similar issue. He played in the goalless draw against Ukraine but was absent from Friday's 2-1 win over Greece.
